Church completes two-day journey across
Now, let's get an update on a story that
we've been following closely since
Tuesday. It's the story of the 133 year
old church in Sweden, built from wood,
which has now been moved across town in
its entirety. Well, the massive building
in the town of Kirina was at risk of
sinking uh following years of iron or
mining in the area. So, it was moved
just three miles away at a speed of 500
m an hour. I've been speaking to the
vicar of the church, Lena Charbe, who
said that she was totally surprised by
the international interest in the plight
of her church.
>> I didn't know that it's going to be so
big in people and media.
So for us, it was like I have never seen
so many people here in Kirina.
What was the biggest challenge when it
came to moving this beautiful but
obviously large wooden structure even if
it was a relatively short distance?
>> Uh for us in the church we have there
was the al altar piece of prince this
painting we couldn't take it down. So
for us it was like we have to get a
solution
uh to transport it but they solved it
the people who worked with it.
And um why is this church so special to
people in the area? I've spoken to
people this week who say they've got a
real emotional connection to it. So
there was no way they were going to let
it be um you know demolished in in any
way. They had to be moved. Just tell us
why it holds such a special place in
people's hearts.
Uh when we get the church from Elco Abia
and Yan Malumbum the church was built to
to was to to be a living room for the
people in Kirina. Everyone would feel
welcome. So the church have no they have
one um cross in the whole church. It's
very special and for people I think it's
like this heart and soul of Kirina
>> and it's define Kir. There are other
buildings in Kirina which are also at
risk of sinking. What's happening to
them?
>> Some of them uh are moving uh this uh in
the in the this year uh and other is
demolished.
Yes. It's like the new city is like
building up and the old city is
>> Okay. and um any celebrations now it's
in place and when's the next service?
>> Oh, they open the church again in late
2026 or uh early 2027. So, it's a time
is we have a year more than a year
before we can have the first service
there. a year, but we're all looking
forward to seeing the next stages of the
church's
